For many years, I’ve always been a huge fan of doing workout outdoor. As a yoga practitioner, I was never used to doing yoga indoor in a studio. My mat was almost always unrolled at the nearby park or green space, which is rare in Jakarta where I live now.
Many doubt whether doing outdoor yoga is good and safe especially when we know the air pollution level is horrifyingly high in the capital area.
But again, if there’s a will, there’s a way.
Very early in the morning, the air pollution level is at its lowest. Hardly no human is in sight. Hence, the relatively cleaner air is there to enjoy.
This is why I love to work out outdoor early in the morning or on weekends when human activity intensity lowers and traffic is almost non-existent.
And my preference is now confirmed by science!
A scientific review by a researcher team at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry that got published in the research journal Environmental Science and Technology on February 4th 2011 showed that one may find benefits to mental and physical well-being from working out in the natural environment.
You’ll enjoy an improved mental well-being after doing sports outdoor (i.e. green space, lawns, forest, parks, beaches, etc).
Why was it so? You may ask.
Outdoor exercise is closely linked to higher sensation of REVITALIZATION.
This means one can feel way more energized, engaged.
At the same time, one may experience a lower intensity of stress and any other negative emotions such as anger, tension, confusion, anxiety and depression which are quite prevalent these days owing to modern lifestyle.
And all these benefits are ready to reap regardless of our sports, our intensity level of sport, our fitness level, etc. In other words, you can still gain the benefits even if you’re just walking down the beach or explore the nearby city park, etc.
But again we all need the commitment of our government to provide more green open space around the city if we are really serious about it.
Speaking of BPJS deficit happening now in Indonesia, why not spending more money to prevent diseases by opening more public parks with calisthenics bars and playground than to cure all those modern evitable illnesses by spending more and more money?
In China, for example, the outdoor workout habit is very common among senior citizens. This lifestyle is integral in the Chinese culture, because moving our body every day is important to move that Chi (Prana/ life energy). These people know if they get lazy to move and work out, they’ll get sick and well being will deteriorate faster than we can imagine.
And working out together outdoor mean we can also meet others. This means we will feel less lonely and depressed, which is a modern plague that we all must be cautious of. (*/)
